What to Know About the March 31 Health Insurance Deadline

There are several things to know if you haven’t signed up for Obamacare. It’s easy to believe that another month brings another Obamacare deadline. March 31st will mark the end of the open enrollment window for consumers hoping to purchase health insurance coverage through the federal health insurance marketplace. After March 31st, Americans without health insurance will have to pay the Obamacare penalty. That fine is calculated as: $95.00 per adult (on a federal income tax return) and $47.50 per child or 1 percent of your household income, whichever is greater. In 2015, that will increase to $325.00 per adult or 2 percent of income. Also, “[a]fter March 31st, consumers looking to purchase plans through the marketplace won’t be able to do so until Open enrollment begins again in October.”

Some of the most severe criticism the Obama administration has faced has been over the clumsy roll-out of healthcare.gov. The online marketplace, as it’s called, has been bogged down in technical issues since its start on October 1, 2013.
