In an ironic twist, a new Obamacare tax is adversely impacting a segment of the healthcare industry, with 33,000 jobs lost. This contradicts the claim by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius last week, that “there is absolutely no evidence … there is any job loss related to the Affordable Care Act.” The Advance Medical Technology Association polled its membership to determine total jobs lost since the 2.3 excise tax on medical devices became effective in January 2013. Results determined that nearly one third of respondents had cut research and development due to the tax; approximately 10 percent had outsourced operations off-shore. Job losses are estimated at 14,000, while jobs not filled stand at 19.000.
Bipartisan support exists for growing jobs in technology manufacturing, yet there is no agreement on how to repeal this relatively new, harmful tax.
